My sculptures are abstracted figurative or fully abstract & usually carved in wood.
Inspiration may come from other artists directly, such as my homage to Modigliani, or more obliquely by interpreting a painting in a 3 dimensional form, such as the deep relief carving loosely based on a Guayasamin painting. Most are purely imaginative, with the final form (especially in the case of abstracts) influenced by the original size, shape & grain of the piece of wood I happen to be working on. The more figurative pieces usually involve the human form, often showing figures interacting, as I try to convey an emotion or portray a relationship ( as in the 'stories of love' series). My woodcarvings are often ‘free’ carved, with little planning outside of my imagination. The work in a other mediums (clay, wax, plaster, stone composites or bronze resin) may require more preparation, although I try to keep this to a minimum as I find it can result in a loss of creative momentum. Woodcarving remains my main passion. The look, fragrance, varieties of type & grain, not too mention the natural warmth & almost irresistible urge to reach out & touch any sculpture carved in wood, ensures it continues to be my preferred medium, albeit the most time consuming!
